Fran Coy, owner of Fran Coy's Salon & Day Spa, began her career in cosmetology in 1961, by attending Guy Cari Beauty Academy of Ann Arbor, even before graduating high school. In 1963, after working in a local salon for 2 years, Fran opened her first salon, The "Magic Mirror Beauty Salon", with her sister and partner, Toddy Smith. Fran and her sister shared the success of the "Magic Mirror" for 14 years. In June of 1977, Fran Coy's Salon & Day Spa was born (called Fran Coy's Hairstylists until 1993), and is located at 418 S. Wagner Road, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

When the salon first opened, it consisted primarily of hair services. Over the years services were added and deleted, depending on their success. Today, Fran Coy's offers a wide variety of services. In addition to hair services, which account for 60 % of their business, they offer manicures, pedicures, acrylic or fiberglass nails, paraffin treatments, body & facial waxing, facials, body wraps, massages, as well as a variety of other skin care treatments, makeovers, make-up application, ear piercing, tanning, wigs & hairpieces for men, women & children, are among some of the other services offered.

The wig salon has grown into a hair replacement center for people who have lost their hair due to medical or natural causes. Hair replacement options include standard stock units all the way to customs units that are designed from a mold taken of the person's head.

Fran has also been active in the community and a supporter of local education. Several years ago Fran worked with local schools to set up The Huron Valley Beauty Academy. Huron Valley Beauty Academy is a Vocational Ed. Program available to high school students in Ann Arbor and the surrounding communities. Fran has served several consecutive years as chairman of the Technical board, which assists educators with curriculum and school decisions.

Other accomplishments and contributions Fran has made to her industry include: 2 yrs. President of Washtenaw County Hairdressers Association Styles Director, 4 years Washtenaw County Hairdresser's Assoc., Styles Director, 2 years West Suburban aff. 39 Hairdresser's Assoc., Miss Professional Cosmetology for Washtenaw County, First Runner up State of Michigan Professional Cosmetology, Michigan Hairdresser's Association President of the Year, and Cosmetologist of the Year.

Once a Miss Saline herself, her interest in Pageants has lead her help organize the Former Miss Saline Assoc., which organizes the Miss Saline Pageant each year. In addition, she was involved with the startup of the Miss Washtenaw Pageant Scholarship program, which produced 2 "Miss Michigan's" it's first 3 years.

In 1991, as part of the International Ambassadors Exchange Program, Fran traveled to Russia & Poland and toured their cosmetology schools and cosmetic factories. She left Moscow on her way to Poland, 1 day before the government coupe that marked the end of the Soviet Union.

"One key reason Fran Coy has been in business for over thirty five years is her commitment to continuing education for her staff" explains John Coy. "We have a staff of 38, including 15 hairstylists, 6 nail technicians, 3 facial technician, and 2 massage therapists who complete several days of education each year, to provide our clients with the latest, most advanced beauty techniques available."

Even though Fran has been very active in the field of cosmetology, she has always found time for her family. Fran and her husband Ed have been married for almost 40 years and have raised three sons, and have 7 grandchildren.
